Start Your Own Country

The concept of borders and an exact definition of what it means to be a sovereign nation is again being debated in the US media.   So, we thought it a perfect time to interject a little humor and lighthearted history.  Besides, every once in a while, we like to take a look at the colorful characters that you can find via the internet.

If you have ever fantasized about starting your own country to escape being told how to live your life, well rest assured that there are groups and individuals who have attempted to make it happen.

These countries are considered “micronations,” meaning they are an entity created and maintained as if it were a nation and/or a state, and generally carrying with it some or all the attributes of a nation.  Most are geographically very small, ranging in size from a single square foot to half a million square miles.  The validity of their claims to sovereignty significantly varies.  List of Micronations

Located off the coast of Great Britain sits one of the more interesting of these entities called Sealand.  It is a story of rock music, perseverance, and a great deal of luck.

The Principality of Sealand is an unrecognized micronation that claims HM Fort Roughs, an offshore platform in the North Sea approximately 12 kilometers (7 nautical miles) off the coast of Suffolk, as its territory. Roughs Tower is a Maunsell Sea Fort that was built by the British during World War II.  The purpose was to defend vital shipping lanes from the Germans.  This specific platform, however, was built in international waters which paved the way for someone to occupy it once the military was withdrawn after the war.

Sealand has an incredible history.  From its founding in the 1960s as a “Pirate Radio” Station which played Pop music to avoid the heavy regulation of the BBC, to armed invasion attempts, and finally lawsuits by the British Government. It would make a great movie script. Personally, we find the entire concept entertaining and think you will enjoy the video we discovered on YouTube regarding this “Principality.”

By the way, if you feel like shopping, the official site below has an online gift shop.  Here you can become a Baron or Baroness or just purchase a t-shirt.
